The manor house, very common in both Puglia and Sicily, is a fortified farm. The manor is the expression of a geo-economic organization connected to the Latifondo, the large-landed gentry who fed the incomes of the aristocratic classes and the bourgeoisie.
Thus the manors were the large-scale farms, inhabited sometimes by the gentry themselves, but the great rural structures included lodging for the peasants, in certain areas only on a seasonal basis, stalls, and storage barns for harvests and fodder.

In Puglia, especially in the Itria valley and in the countryside in the Provinces of Taranto, Bari, Brindisi, Lecce, Capitanata, and in the areas traditionally given to agriculture, it is possible to find such structures of notable and extended volume, for the most part abandoned, but sometimes restored and re-used as agro-tourism farms.

For the past few years, we have seen the recuperation of a few of these historic manors which have been restructured to adapt them to Agro-tourism and Bed & Breakfast. In this way, the important objective of guaranteeing the safety and conservation of these historic monuments is achieved, modifying only in part the function and end use. Differentiating from similar European experiences (the Paradores in Spain or the French Relais & Chateaux) these activities are not managed by the state but by private enterprise, generally single ownership.
