Apart from the olive tree as absolute protagonist, which is everywhere as far as you can see, the characteristic vegetation in Puglia is the Mediterranean maquis. This last is the protagonist along the coast: here it grows as shrubs which have a notable resistance to the dryness of the summer season. In the hinterlands and on the hills, there are trees, together with rocky pastures.

Along the coastal areas, moreover, many extended pine forests are to be found, mostly on the coastal promontory of the Gargano and along the Gulf of Taranto; on the Salento coast there are vast oak woods.

Other prominent vegetation in Puglia are, in the higher grounds, live oaks, beech, maples, oak and hornbeam trees. As far as flowering vegetation is concerned, for the most spontaneous, there are gum, broom, thorny oak, juniper and FENICIO.
